Active Target – Motorized Laser Tracker Target
Improves Manufacturing Efficiency
![]()
The award-winning Active Target™ from Automated Precision Inc. (API) is a one-of-a-kind next-generation Spherically Mounted Retroreflector (SMR). Active Target™ enables automated measurements of machine tools, robots, or any other moving object where a standard SMR cannot perform the task.
How does Active Target work?
The reflective center of Active Target™ works similarly to any standard SMR. The difference is that Active Target™ integrates motorized technology that automatically positions the reflector so it always faces the tracker, regardless of movement.
Active Target™ Advantages:
Since Active Target automatically keeps itself locked on, it is easy to measure long rails, vehicle motion, and even complex robotic movements. Active Target also tracks the position of CMMs and CNC machining equipment without manual user intervention.
Active Target houses a break-resistant SMR (Spherically Mounted Retroreflector). SMRs can track at distances over 80 m with accuracies of ±2.5 microns, providing high-precision line-of-sight measurement.
The motorized target’s central reflector has 360° rotation, allowing continuous lock to the laser tracker and eliminating beam interruptions (infinite AZ rotation).
FEATURES AND BENEFITS:
- MOTOR DRIVEN TARGET: Built-in motorized technology automatically orients the reflector to face the laser tracker regardless of part movement
- 360° MEASUREMENT: The central reflector rotates 360°, enabling continuous tracking and eliminating beam interruptions (infinite AZ rotation)
- SMR-GRADE CENTERING: The Active Target reflector provides the same accuracy as a standard SMR
- EASY AND SAFE USE: Battery powered and wireless, ensuring safety and avoiding cable entanglement with machine parts
- MOUNTING VERSATILITY: Weighing only 0.9 kg (2 lbs), designed for mounting on industrial robots and CNC machines
APPLICATIONS:
Active Target™ is a 360° rotating motorized SMR powered by battery that locks onto the laser tracker and automatically aligns with the laser beam, enabling automated tracking and measurement of machine tools, industrial robots, or automation systems where a standard SMR cannot operate.
Applications include:
- Volumetric Error Calibration (VEC)
- Machine tool inspection
- Robotic inspection
- CNC calibration
- Rail alignment
- CMM tracking
