The Melt Flow Index is directly related to the viscosity of the molten material. It enables the operator to estimate the average molecular weight while simultaneously providing an indication of the material's melt flow capability through a calibrated die.

 

The Melt Flow Index is defined as the mass or volume of molten material that passes through a calibrated die under a specified load, at a constant temperature, over a testing period of 10 minutes.
